Dental Implants Q & A

Hertel Family Dentistry

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are similar in shape to screws, and they act as artificial tooth roots. These implants are surgically placed within and bonded to your jawbone. After healing, dental implants serve as a sturdy base for supporting crowns (custom-made artificial teeth).

Dr. Samad helps determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants. She’ll go over your health history with you, and complete a dental examination and radiographic testing. If you’re in good health, dental implants might be a good option for you.

Specific illness, such as leukemia or diabetes, and using tobacco products may interfere with the healing process.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants help you get the beautiful smile you deserve. As you age, your teeth can loosen; get chipped, broken, or cracked; or even fall out. Dental implants and crowns look and feel like real teeth, helping you gain the confidence you deserve and get back the ability to eat the foods you love.

If you’re missing more than one tooth, dental implants are used to hold bridges or dentures in place.

What should I expect during a dental implant procedure?

Placing dental implants and crowns, bridges, or dentures, is generally a two-step process:

Step 1

During your first procedure, the team at Hertel Family Dentistry surgically places dental implants within your jawbone. The implants slowly heal as they bond to your jawbone permanently over 3-6 months.

Step 2

Once your implant has healed and bonded to your jawbone, Dr. Samad makes an incision to expose the top of the implant. An impression of your mouth is prepared to help construct your new custom-made crown.

You’ll be given a temporary replacement crown to wear during the healing process, and you’ll need to stay with soft foods. Once your permanent artificial tooth is ready, Dr. Samad secures it in place during a separate visit.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants and crowns can last up to 15 years or longer, depending on how you care for your teeth.
