Dentures Q & A

Hertel Family Dentistry

What are dentures?

Dentures are artificial teeth that look and feel like real teeth, and they can restore your smile to what it once was. These removable appliances allow you to eat the foods you want, speak more clearly, and gain the confidence you deserve.

What are the different types of dentures?

Different dentures Dr. Samad may recommend are conventional, immediate, and overdentures:

Conventional dentures

Traditional dentures are fully removable, custom-made, and placed in your mouth after Dr. Samad removes your remaining teeth. When your gums have healed, which may take several months, you can start wearing conventional dentures. Partial dentures are for when some of your original teeth remain.

Immediate dentures

You can wear immediate dentures soon after your teeth become extracted, so you don’t have to go without teeth while gum tissue is healing. However, you may need to have immediate dentures remade or relined after the healing process is complete.

Implant-supported overdentures

Overdentures fit firmly over dental implants surgically placed within your jawbone by Dr. Samad. This option allows your new artificial teeth to fit more securely than conventional dentures.

Receiving implant-supported overdentures is a two-step process. Implants become surgically placed during your first surgical appointment, then allowed to heal over a period of months. Impressions are then made to create permanent custom-made dentures. You’ll be given temporary dentures to wear until permanent dentures are ready.

How should I care for my dentures?

Caring for your dentures increases the length of time they’ll last, and helps prevent stains and odors. Proper denture care includes:

  • Brushing dentures daily with a denture care product
  • Removing dentures at night, and soaking them in denture-cleansing liquid or water
  • Avoiding smoking

Are dentures a good fit for me?

Dr. Samad and the experienced dental team at Hertel Family Dentistry determine if you’re a good candidate for dentures, and which type of dentures best match your needs. She’ll complete a dental examination, imaging tests as needed, and a discussion of your dental health history.
