Have you ever wondered how some movie stars get their perfect pearly whites? They weren’t born that way: Veneers were heavily used by celebrities as far back as the 1920s to give them a camera-perfect smile. Today, the expert care team at Hertel Family Dentistry in Buffalo, New York, uses veneers to correct a variety of cosmetic issues with your teeth. Veneers are a set of thin shells specially crafted to fit over the front of your teeth, improving their appearance. Veneers typically consist of porcelain or resin, each with their benefits.
In most cases, veneers are for people who are dissatisfied with the look of their teeth and want a more drastic change than teeth cleaning and whitening. The care team at Hertel Family Dentistry may recommend veneers if you have teeth with some of the following problems:
When you decide you want veneers, you’ll first discuss what changes and ultimate results you’re hoping to achieve through the treatment. Part of this preparation may include X-rays or molds of your mouth to help map out the result.
After you and Dr. Samad have a plan, she will remove a small amount of enamel from each tooth receiving a veneer. This amount is roughly equal to the size of the veneer and ensures that your teeth are approximately the same thickness following the procedure. The team then creates an impression of your teeth. An outside lab will use the print to create the veneer.
When the veneer arrives, Dr. Samad compares it to your teeth to make sure it fits and matches the color of your other teeth. If everything looks good, she secures it in place with a special cement and dries it using a specialized light beam.
Once they’re in place, you don’t have to provide any special care at home for your veneers, and you can brush, floss, and rinse as usual.
Assuming you take good care of your teeth, your veneers should last anywhere from 5-15 years.
Keep in mind that wear and tear on the veneers can shorten their longevity, so you should avoid certain habits such as grinding your teeth or chewing ice, if possible. If you need help stopping these habits, your Hertel provider is happy to help.
