Wisdom Teeth Q & A

Hertel Family Dentistry

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a set of molars, also known as third molars, which come in between ages 17 and 21. These teeth are the last set of permanent teeth to appear. When wisdom teeth arrive, there may be room for them to grow in properly. But at other times, dental problems arise due to crowding. Wisdom teeth won’t develop in everyone.

Why are wisdom teeth extracted?

Many people don’t have enough room in their mouth for wisdom teeth to come in without causing other teeth to shift. Oral health complications that can happen when your mouth is too small to accommodate wisdom teeth are:

  • Infection
  • Teeth moving
  • Pain
  • Cysts
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Tumors

During your next dental exam, the experienced team at Hertel Family Dentistry lets you know if your wisdom tooth needs removal due to current or potential complications.

What should I expect during wisdom teeth extraction?

Wisdom teeth extraction is an outpatient surgery, so you’ll go home the same day. Dr. Samad talks with you ahead of time to determine which anesthesia option best matches your needs and comfort level. You may receive:

  • Local anesthesia
  • Sedation anesthesia
  • General anesthesia

You’re under anesthesia, so you don’t feel pain as our team at Hertel Family Dentistry makes an incision in your gum tissue to expose wisdom teeth and bones. She removes the teeth, including teeth roots and bones that block access to the roots.

We’ll clean the surrounding area, remove any remaining debris, and stitch the wounds closed if necessary. To complete the procedure, our team places gauze over the wounds to control bleeding. You’ll wake up in a recovery area after surgery and stay until the anesthesia wears off.

How should I care for my teeth after surgery?

You can resume normal day-to-day activities the day after wisdom teeth extraction, but avoid strenuous exercise and drinking from a straw for at least a week after surgery. Follow our team's instructions to help your mouth heal properly after surgery:

  • Avoid smoking
  • Take medication as needed for pain
  • Ice the affected area to reduce swelling
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated
  • Begin by eating only soft foods after surgery
